The holiday season can be a stressful time for many, especially those supporting a loved one with dementia. It is a time filled with increased social interaction and changes in routines. This can be overwhelming to those living with dementia, as routine is incredibly important for their well-being. However, there are ways to make this time of year more enjoyable and less stressful for everyone.

Understanding Your Loved Ones Needs

For someone with dementia, a change in their environment and/or routine can lead to:

  • Confusion

  • Agitation

  • Challenges with memory

It is important to understand the increased difficulties your loved one may have while visiting family, such as overstimulation. Being mindful of their needs can include short visits, maintaining a comfortable environment, and adhering to their routine as much as possible.

Communicate with Family Members

Holiday traditions and visits may look different this year, and that's okay! Communication between family members is key for ensuring a joyful season for all. Take the time to discuss what adjustments you can make to better support your loved one with dementia. Consider moving the location of visits closer to your loved one, or having shorter and less crowded gatherings. Through communication, family members can manage their expectations and have more patience.

Enjoy the Small Moments

Set realistic and attainable expectations for holiday time with your loved one. Focus on having simple, yet meaningful, interactions. These moments of connection are more valuable than forced interaction.

Take Care of Yourself

It can be difficult to enjoy the holidays when circumstances are not the same as before. Don't hesitate to reach out to family, friends, or a local group to support you through this season.
