Did you know Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is the second most common form of progressive dementia? This month, it is important to raise awareness for the disease through education and advocacy.
What is Lewy Body Dementia?
Lewy Body Dementia is a caused by the buildup of abnormal protein deposits (Lewy bodies) in the brain's nerve cells. It is distinguishable from other forms of dementia due to its complexity of symptoms varying from memory loss to Parkinson's-like movement. Some other symptoms include:
Cognitive fluctuations
Sleep disorders
Mood changes
Automatic Nervous System (ANS) dysfunction
Why Awareness Matters
Since symptoms of LBD are similar to other conditions, it is often misdiagnosed or overlooked. By raising awareness we can help:
Detect early recognition and diagnosis
Determine proper medications and support to manage the condition
Empower caregivers to better support loved ones
We encourage you to research Lewy Body Dementia and find ways to make a difference for families navigating their journey with the disease. Visit the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia for more information.
