Home Care in Nova Scotia

Navigating home care in Nova Scotia can be overwhelming, especially if you don't know where to start. Earth Angels Home Care is here to provide you with answers to your questions, and to help make your journey easier.

Choosing the Right Home Care Provider

Choosing the right home care provider for you or your loved one is the most important step in your care journey.

  • Research Local Home Care: Look for care providers in your area that offer the specific services you need. Don't hesitate to explore your options by checking out their website, or giving them a call to find the right fit for you.

  • Speak With a Team Member: Speaking directly with a representative of the home care provider ensures all your questions are answered and gives you a chance to make a connection with a member of the team.

  • Ask for a In-Home assessment: Typically, home care providers will offer a free in-home assessment to learn about your needs, develop a custom plan and provide a quote. This assessment helps match you with the right caregiver, as well as determine the type and frequency of care required.

Navigating the Costs of Home Care

Is Home Care Covered?

Private and non-medical home care is not typically covered by a health care plan. However, there are several resources and grants available to seniors to help with the costs of home care.

  • The Home Support Direct Funding Program supports eligible Nova Scotians with care needs by providing them with funding to purchase Home Support Services (personal care, respite, meal preparation, and light housekeeping.)

  • The Supportive Care Program supports eligible Nova Scotians with cognitive impairments (difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering, etc.) by providing them with up to $1000/month for Home Support Services (personal care, respite, meal preparation and household chores). Under this program people may also be eligible to receive reimbursement for snow removal services up to $495/year.

To access these programs, call Nova Scotia Health toll-free at 1-800-225-7225. A Continuing Care Coordinator will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Can Veterans Benefits be Used for Home Care?

Yes. Eligible veterans may qualify for home care funding from Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Independence Program provides annual tax-free funding for services such as grounds maintenance, housekeeping, meal preparation, personal care, and professional health and support services.

Does Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance Cover Home Care?

Yes. Long-term care insurance provides an income-style benefit if you become unable to care for yourself due to aging, a serious accident, severe illness or deteriorated mental abilities.
