November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a global day to recognize and acknowledge the condition. This month aims to shift the conversation about diabetes from judgement to understanding the impact it has on so many individuals all over the world.

What is Diabetes?

Many people believe diabetes is caused by poor lifestyle choices like diet and "eating too much sugar." The truth is, diabetes is a complex condition that has several causes ranging from genetics, family history, and environmental factors. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce insulin, or properly use the insulin it produces. This results in blood sugar (glucose) remaining in the bloodstream as opposed to entering the cells. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 occurs when the body's immune system destroys insulin-producing cells, while Type 2 occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, or doesn't produce enough of it.

How to Manage Diabetes?

There are several ways to manage diabetes including lifestyle changes, insulin therapy, medication, and blood sugar monitoring. Living with diabetes can be challenging, stressful, and expensive. Managing the condition requires a commitment to lifestyle adjustments and medical demands. However, individuals with diabetes can still life full lives. If you don't know anyone living with the diabetes, it is important to educate yourself on what it means, the stigma surrounding it, and how it affects individuals differently.

How to Raise Awareness?

Raising awareness about diabetes doesn't need to be hard. Finding resources to learn about the condition is great way to increase awareness. You may decide to share resources or information on your social media, or with your social circle. There also may be local events to attend in support of diabetes, or you can start your own! It is important to continue learning, educating, and advocating for diabetes awareness.
