What is Home Care?

What is home care? What are home care services? Who can benefit from home care? We started a new Facebook Live series with Simple Local Life to answer these questions and more!

Our first episode aired November 6th. Jennifer of Simple Local Life, and Tamara Ballard, the Client Care Manager for Earth Angels Home Care on the south shore of Nova Scotia, had a conversation to introduce Earth Angels Home Care and how we can help you. Watch the video to learn more about home care and home care services.

Earth Angels Home Care started in Truro as a local company fourteen years ago. As a result of the tremendous growth and success, the company expanded to the south shore of Nova Scotia two years ago. The office in Bridgewater opened in October 2016 and since then, has been providing much needed home care services to the communities of Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Chester and Mahone Bay.

What is Home Care?

Home care provides services to seniors and anyone who needs support to stay in their home and in their community. The services help to maintain a person’s independence, enrich their life in the environment that they are most familiar with, and help them to remain at home for as long as possible.

What Services are Provided?

Home care services are customized to the person’s needs. Services include companionship, transportation for groceries or to doctor’s appointments, personal care, housekeeping, respite care, medication reminders, and meal preparation, for example.

Many people are simply looking for companionship for their loved one to help overcome loneliness and isolation, and this is a service provided to many of our clients. A caregiver may play a game of cards or take the person to church or to visit family and friends. All caregivers providing transportation have a clean driver’s abstract and extra insurance.

We also provide respite care for a spouse or family member who is the primary caregiver of a loved one living with dementia or other chronic illnesses. If you're a caregiver, it’s critical that you get a break and time to yourself so that you don’t experience caregiver burnout.

In some cases, a doctor will only release a person from hospital if home care services are in place. We also have nurses on staff who can provide more advanced medical care if required.

Caring for a Person with Dementia

Earth Angels Home Care specializes in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Tamara has trained extensively with Teepa Snow, one of the world's leading dementia experts and is a Certified Positive Approach to Care Trainer. All our caregivers receive Positive Approach to Care training as well. This specialized training ensures that caregivers learn hands-on care partnering techniques and skills. Every caregiver knows how to approach and communicate with a person living with dementia.

How Does Someone Get Started with Home Care?

The first step is to reach out to the office by phone at 1-902-530-6205 or email [email protected]. Tamara will arrange for a free, no obligation in-home assessment during which she will meet with you and the person who will receive the services. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and for her to get a better idea of what services will be needed.

It’s not unusual for there to be resistance on the part of the person needing the services and at Earth Angels Home Care, we understand that. Respect and maintaining dignity of the client is always our top priority.  The care plan is based on the person and what their ideal day looks like. We find out about their likes and dislikes, their background, their family and who they are as a person. The goal is to create a perfect match between the client and caregiver and to build the client-caregiver relationship.

If you have any questions or concerns about your loved one, please stop by the office at 101-42 Glen Allan Drive in Bridgewater or call (902)530-6205. Tamara will be happy to meet with you and provide you with more information.
